How a MeridianReview score is put together

Six weighted categories, every one scored from evidence we gathered ourselves on a funded account. No category is scored from marketing copy, and none of them can be bought.

Method version 1.2 · Last revised 13 August 2026

The weighting

What counts, and how much

The weighting is deliberately lopsided. Two categories — licensing and withdrawal speed — carry more than half the total, because those are the two that determine whether you get your money back and who is accountable if you do not.

Category Weight What we measure
Licensing & transparency 30% Presence on the Gambling Commission public register; licence number and holder published on the brand's own pages; whether a white-label arrangement is disclosed; clarity of the complaints and dispute-resolution route.
Withdrawal speed 25% Two timed withdrawals through two different methods, measured from the moment the request is submitted to the moment funds settle. Marketing claims are ignored.
Bonus terms clarity 15% Whether wagering requirement, maximum conversion, maximum stake, contribution weighting and expiry appear before you opt in — not only whether they are fair, but whether they are findable.
Customer support 12% Four contacts at different hours, timed. We ask one deliberately awkward question and score the accuracy of the answer, not the friendliness of it.
Payment coverage 10% Range of deposit and withdrawal methods, whether the same method works in both directions, and any fee charged at the operator's end.
Safer-gambling tooling 8% Deposit and loss limits, reality checks, cooling-off and self-exclusion — how many taps from the account menu, and whether any of it requires contacting support.
The process

Six weeks, one account at a time

Week 1 —

Register check

We locate the domain on the Gambling Commission public register and record the licence number, holder, account number, permitted activities and start dates. If the domain is absent, the review is abandoned and nothing is published.

Week 1–2 —

Sign-up and verification

A real account with real documents. We log every document requested, every hour the account spends restricted, and whether age verification happens before or after the first deposit.

Week 2–5 —

Live use

Small stakes at ordinary hours across several weeks. We are not testing outcomes — outcomes are random — we are testing the machinery around them: balances, statements, session timers and limit tools.

Week 3 & 5 —

Two withdrawals

Two requests, two methods, timed to the minute. Any hold, any additional document request and any bonus-related restriction is recorded and published, whether or not it was reasonable.

Week 5 —

Support probes

Four contacts across morning, afternoon, evening and overnight. Response time is recorded; so is whether the answer to the awkward question was correct.

Week 6 —

Scoring and review

Scores are set from the log by the writer, then checked by a second person against the same evidence. Commercial arrangements are not visible to either of them.

A score is a comparison. Some findings are not comparative — they are disqualifying, and no weighting can rescue them. We would remove a brand from this website, without notice and regardless of any commercial arrangement, on any of the following:

  • The domain no longer appears on the Gambling Commission public register, or the licence is suspended, surrendered or revoked.
  • A withdrawal is refused or indefinitely delayed without a reason permitted under the operator's own published terms.
  • Age or identity verification can be bypassed, or a deposit is accepted before verification completes.
  • A self-exclusion or GAMSTOP registration is not honoured.
  • Marketing is directed at under-18s, or at people who have self-excluded.
  • A term is enforced that was not published, or is materially different from the published version.

A high score does not mean a brand is a good idea for you. It means that, measured against the six categories above, it handles your money and your data better than the alternative we compared it with. It says nothing about whether you should be gambling at all, and nothing about the odds — which do not change from one brand to another in any way a review can detect.

Use the score to eliminate the brands that fail on things you care about. Do not use it as a recommendation. If you are reading this because something already feels out of control, the most useful link on this website is Responsible Gaming, not either review.

Every review carries the date its licence data was last verified. We re-check the register at least quarterly and immediately whenever a reader tells us something has changed. When we amend a review materially, we say so on the page rather than editing quietly. Our commercial arrangements are described in full on the Disclosure page.
